The ATLAS ring is a depiction of the Greek mythological titan Atlas. Set with a sky topaz, the gem represents the heavens that he is condemned to hold up for eternity. A common misconception is that Atlas was forced to hold the Earth on his shoulders, but Classical art shows Atlas holding the celestial spheres.
Atlas was a powerful Titan known for his endurance as well as his knowledge of mathematics and astronomy. As the second strongest Titan, Atlas led the rebellion against Zeus and the other Olympian gods in a war called the Titanomachy.
The expression “to carry the weight of the world on one’s shoulders” comes from the Greek myth of Atlas. Dropping his burden would be the collapse of the heavens and cause the sky to come crashing down onto the earth. Whether Atlas carries the sky or the globe, he carries the fate of the world on his shoulders.
The “Atlantic Ocean” is derived from “Sea of Atlas”. The name of Atlantis mentioned in Plato’s Timaeus’ dialogue derives from the Titan Atlas.
