With a history that spans an impressive 28 centuries, Rome holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe. Although Roman mythology places the founding of Rome around 753 BC, archaeological evidence suggests that human settlement in the area predates this, solidifying Rome’s significance as a major human settlement for almost three millennia.
In the epic poem “The Aeneid” by Virgil, Rome is described with the phrase “Imperium sine fine,” which translates to “an empire without end” in English. This expression reflects the pride and confidence of the city’s inhabitants, who believed that Rome would endure even as empires rose and fell.
During the Roman period, signet rings held great importance as symbols of identity and status. They served as both personal adornments and functional seals for signing important documents. The most prevalent type of signet ring during this era featured intricate motifs engraved in intaglio onto gemstones or metals such as gold or bronze.
