The DIONYSUS coin is a genuine mint-condition ancient Greek coin from the Seleucid Empire. It features a depiction of Antiochos VI Dionysos, who reigned around 143/2 BC. He was the son of Alexander Balas and Cleopatra Thea, the daughter of Ptolemy VI of Egypt. According to the later rabbinical work, the Scroll of Antiochus (Megillat Antiochus), when Antiochos learned of his army's defeat in Judea, he boarded a ship and fled to the coastal cities. Wherever he went, the people rebelled and referred to him as "The Fugitive," which ultimately led him to drown himself in the sea.
The obverse of the coin showcases a monogram depiction of the sun god Apollo. Apollo is recognized as the god of archery, music, dance, truth and prophecy, healing, disease, the Sun and light, poetry, and more. He is depicted nude, testing an arrow while placing a hand on a grounded bow, seated to the left on the omphalos, with his legs positioned between them.
This very rare artifact is mounted in an 18k solid gold frame and is now available as a one-of-a-kind piece.
