The ACHILLES CUFF was worn as a decorative accessory and as a class designation of ritualistic purposes. In ancient Greece, cuffs were not only worn for decoration, but also by Greek soldiers for protection. This practical and fashionable style was eventually adopted by Roman soldiers as well. Cuff bracelets made of metals like gold or silver were prevalent in ancient Greece and Rome, often adorned with gemstones or intricate engravings. In these societies, cuff bracelets symbolized power and social standing.
Achilles, known as the bravest and greatest warrior in Agamemnon’s army during the Trojan War, was said to have adorned himself with jewelry, including metal cuffs and armor, for both protection and ritualistic decoration. According to post-Homeric myths, Achilles was considered physically invulnerable, and it was believed that the Greeks could not win the Trojan War without him.
Legend has it that Achilles was immersed in the river Styx by his mother, making him invulnerable, except for his heel. He was also dressed with ambrosia and given a shield and a sword forged by Hephaestus, as per his mother’s request. However, Achilles withdrew from the Trojan War after Agamemnon took his wife, Briseis, as a replacement for Chryseis.
The Achilles Cuff is completely hand-sculpted and engraved, featuring Latin scripts that symbolize the philosophical culture of the hellenistic period. The inscriptions translate to “Every soldier decides their own destiny, every loved one forges their own path, where there is love, there is tragedy, where there is life, there is suffering.”
