The enigmatic A, whose 'signature' appeared on so much early Ptolemaic coinage, was an engraver of truly great talent. His portrait of the dynasty's founder, Ptolemy | Soter, with his powerful, even dangerous, look, compounded by his deep set eyes and beaky nose, was so successful it was copied on every succeeding ruler's coinage as a badge of rulership. As is usual with so many dynasties, while some of his successors had real talent, most did not. In fact, one could suggest that the two greatest members of the House of Ptolemy were the first and last rulers: Ptolemy | and Cleopatra VII.
