Hand sculpted frame with a 20 carat Aquamarine gemstone engraved with intaglio representing the Lion of Saint Mark and its necklace. Mark, apostle, while traveling in Europe to Alexandria of Egypt, rested in Venice for a night. In his sleep, an angel in the form of a winged lion appeared and said to him "Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus. Hic requiescet corpus tuum." ("Peace be with thee, O Mark, my evangelist. Here thy body will rest."). After his death, he became associated in the Tetramorph with the Winged Lion. His body only came to Venice hundreds of years later. But Venice and its power and influence in the Mediterranean Sea already carried their patron's symbol as their emblem. Today, the winged lion is both a well recognized symbol but also a mystical one, departing from its religious origins.
