The origins of Ariel’s story can be traced back to Ancient Greece, where she is believed to be a nereid, one of the illustrious daughters of the sea-god Triton. In the epic tale of The Odyssey, renowned Greek poet Homer frequently mentioned mermaids, adding to the allure and mystique surrounding these mythical creatures.
Another early mermaid legend emerged in Syria around 1000 BC, featuring the goddess Atargatis. She, too, possessed the ability to transform into a fish and dove into a lake to assume her aquatic form. However, the gods denied her complete transformation, allowing only her lower body to become a fish, while retaining her human form above.
Mermaids have long been regarded as symbols of protection and guidance, revered as guardians of the ocean and its inhabitants. Across various cultures, they embody the power of nature to nurture and sustain life, serving as protectors and guides of the deep seas.
Deeply intertwined with the element of water, mermaids were revered as personifications of the sea, worshipped as divine beings. In Greek mythology, there were a total of 50 mermaids, known as Nereids, who were the daughters of Nereus and Doris, and granddaughters of the Titan Ocean. These ethereal maidens were celebrated for their incomparable beauty.
